Wall graphics can breathe new life into a space and help make a room memorable. But while the results speak for themselves, it takes time and patience to install them properly. Rushing could cause them to become misaligned or damaged, and you might be less than impressed with the end result. We want you to love your graphics from day one, and so we’ve created this guide!

Read on to learn how to apply wall graphics the right way, and for gorgeous results that exceed expectations.

Want to know how to apply wall stickers? The terms ‘graphics', 'stickers' and 'decals’ are often used interchangeably. While we refer to graphics as large imagery, this guide can also be used when applying smaller stickers and decals.

Step 1: Choose the right wall film

With so many options to choose from, it’s smart to consider the wall you own and what you’d like to achieve. Do you want something that lasts for years at a time, or would you prefer a removable graphic that’s easy to take down a few months later? Does your wall have a textured surface or is it smooth to the touch? Answer these questions early so you can look for a product that ticks the right boxes.

You also can’t just put an indoor graphic on a building's exterior. Outdoor wall graphics have thicker adhesives for bricks and concrete, so be clear on where your graphics will be applied before you buy.

Step 2: Check and prepare the wall

Don’t apply your design without checking the wall first! If there’s flaking paint or peeling plaster, then your graphics will run into issues. If the wall’s stable, we recommend giving it a quick wipe with a lint-free cloth before getting to work. You can also use a vacuum to remove layers of dust. If your wall’s greasy, wash it with gentle soapy water and then leave it to dry.

Peeling paints, damp and mould should all be resolved before you apply your graphics. Otherwise, the shabby substrate will cause your design to fail sooner than you’d like.

Step 3: Get what you need

Most wall graphics, decals and wall stickers are simple to install when you know how, but even experts need the right tools for the job. Make sure you have:

  • Application tape
  • A squeegee
  • A small knife or scalpel
  • A step ladder if needed
  • A friend for assistance

Keep the space clean and tidy, and make sure someone’s around to help if you run into trouble. Applying a design to your wall can be fun and creative, but safety should always come first!

Step 4: Hang your graphics in place

It’s time to start the application process. Measure the film against the wall and position it in place. You can also mark its position with a pencil or some tape just in case you drop it. Pull the film taut to ensure you’re completely happy with its placement and put masking tape on the top and edges. At this point, it’s a good idea to step back and see how things are going. If the graphics are slightly off, you can easily make some minor corrections.

Installing a design with multiple panels? We recommend overlapping them by 10 mm to combat shrinkage. This doesn’t apply to our pre-pasted wallpaper (available with pattern designs), which can be applied with a butt seam and no overlap, or our one-piece wall covering – ideal for scenes and landscapes.

Step 5: Apply the top of the wall film

Now release the top of the liner to expose the adhesive underneath. If you have an especially large graphic, it may be easier to remove the film from the liner, and then cut the liner off you can then apply the graphic straight to the wall.

Press the top of the film and use the squeegee to make first tack. Apply pressure to your design evenly, working outwards to prevent air bubbles. Once you’ve applied the top of the film, you can then move down the graphic and release more of the liner.

Applying graphics outdoors?

If you’re using outdoor wall graphics or placing your graphics on bricks, concrete or render, then the process is slightly different. The film must be heated so it can contour to the substrate, so we’d recommend using a hairdryer or heat gun.

Step 6: Apply the remaining graphics

With more of the liner released, work the squeegee downwards to push the graphics onto the surface. Firmly but slowly pull more of the liner away, in advance of the squeegee. We recommend using overlapping strokes to help the film make contact with the wall.

With your wall graphics installed and the liner gone, apply pressure one last time – making sure to work the edges in particular. If you still see air pockets, use a pin to make tiny holes and then squeegee the air through them.

Finally, step back from your graphics and admire your work. You should also avoid touching it for a while to allow the bond to strengthen. A job well done!
